It is October and it is spitting. Not raining properly, just enough that you keep wiping your face and squinting. You put the hood up and now you can only see straight ahead, so you put it down again, and five minutes later you are wiping your face again.

Here's how it works.
The crown is flat and low. That is what a cadet cap is, and it is why this one goes underneath a jacket hood instead of fighting it. A baseball cap domes up and pushes the hood forward; a wide-brim hat will not go under one at all. This sits flat, the hood goes over the top, and the short stiff brim still clears your eyes underneath.
The brim is short on purpose. Long enough to keep drizzle off your face, short enough that it does not catch the wind or knock against a raised collar.
At the back is a metal slide buckle, not a plastic snapback. It adjusts anywhere from 21.25 to 23.6 in and it holds where you set it, with no row of plastic teeth pressing a line into your forehead. Small metal eyelets in each side panel let the heat out on a climb.
The cotton is washed before it is made up, so it arrives already broken in and faded rather than stiff and bright. It looks better at the end of a season than at the start.
Straight about what this is not. It is not a sun hat. The brim is short, and we do not put a UPF number on it — if you want real sun coverage you want a wide brim, not this. It is not waterproof either; cotton is cotton. And it is a single layer, so it is a cap for cool weather rather than a warm hat for a hard freeze.
