The car comes around the bend before you hear it.
You are half a mile from home on a road with no sidewalk, in the dark, in a jacket the color of the asphalt. Your headlamp is throwing light forward, onto the ground in front of your feet, which is the one direction that does nothing at all for the driver coming up behind you. You move onto the shoulder and hope. That is the whole plan.
This vest is the other half of that plan. It goes on over whatever you are already wearing, and it does two different things at once, which is the entire point of it.
Here's how it works.
Retro-reflective tape runs the full length of both shoulder straps and right around the waist belt. It does not glow on its own. It takes a car's headlights and sends them straight back at the driver, which is why it reads as a bright moving X across your back long before your outline does. That is the passive half, and it needs no battery at all.
The LED strip on the front panel is the active half. It makes its own light, so it is already doing its job before any headlight finds you: at junctions, from the side, and in the long gaps between streetlights. Three modes, steady, fast flash and slow flash, from one push button on the panel. It charges over USB, and the splitter cable in the box fills two of them at once.
One size, adjustable from a 26 in waist out to 49 in, so it goes over a t-shirt in July and a winter coat in January without a second thought.
The gear it replaces:
- A headlamp on its own - lights the road ahead of you and shows a driver behind you almost nothing
- Clip-on lights - one per pocket, easy to forget, easy to lose off a hem mid-run
- A reflective jacket - only works once headlights are already pointed at you, and only in the weather you bought it for
Key Features:
- Retro-reflective tape along both shoulder straps and the full waist belt sends a car's headlights straight back at the driver instead of soaking them up
- An LED strip on the front panel makes its own light, so you read as a person before a headlight ever finds you
- Three light modes, steady, fast flash and slow flash, cycled from one push button on the front panel
- USB rechargeable through a rubber-capped port, with a splitter cable in the box that charges two vests at the same time
- One size fits a 26 to 49 in waist and a 16 to 24 in shoulder, worn over a t-shirt or over a winter jacket
- Elastic straps and X-clips pull the whole set taut so it stays where you put it instead of riding up at pace
Activearo builds gear for the long day outdoors. Two kinds of visibility on one strap set that goes on over anything you already own. If it fails before it should, we sort it.
